On Saturday, December 3, Fr. Innocent Smith, O.P. will give a set of lectures titled: “The Rest is Said in Praise to God: Thomas Aquinas on the Rites of the Mass.” Throughout his writings, St Thomas Aquinas offers profound insights into the liturgy that draw on the thought of his predecessors while offering new insights into the mysteries of the Church’s liturgy. These lectures will draw on the commentaries on the Mass that may be found in his Scriptum on the Sentences of Peter Lombard and the Summa theologiae. These lectures aim to help us to enter more deeply into the liturgy as experienced in its various forms today. The first lecture takes place at 1:00 pm, the second at 2:30 pm, and Mass will be offered at 3:45 pm. Refreshments will be available before the first and second lectures. The event will take place at the Catholic Center at NYU (238 Thompson Street, New York, NY). Parkchester Cares will be distributing children’s coats November 14-19 & 21 from 3-9PM Mon.-Fri. & 9AM-8PM Sat. at the Boys and Girls Club of Parkchester, 2051 St. Raymond Ave. No appointment is needed. The varsity Horsemen of St. Helena School will play Monday night in the finals of the Catholic Basketball League Tip off Tournament, having defeated St. Ignatius School 56-22 and St. Ignatius Loyola School 37-21 in games played earlier this week. Two varsity players, Francisco Mattei and Omari Ward, scored in double digits during both games. Ward scored 19 points against Ignatius and 12 points against Loyola, while Mattei scored 13 against Ignatius and 16 against Loyola. So far, Ward is the only Horseman to score in all four quarters, which he did against Loyola. The Horsemen sank three 3s in their opening game against Ignatius, coming from Mattei, Hope Martinez, and Kameron Carrasquilla, while Ward and Mattei each sank a three against Loyola. Justin Martinez hit five 2s against Ignatius and scored seven points against Loyola. Devonne Stewart sank a two in the third quarter against Loyola, and Adam Waldrop hit a two in both the second and fourth quarters against Ignatius. Nick Casey was the only Loyola player to score in double digits, with 12, playing in his first organized basketball game. Loyola was 0/3 from the foul line, while the horsemen were 3/8. Against Ignatius, the Horsemen were 13/17 and Ignatius was 3/10 from the line. In the opening junior varsity game of the tournament, the Horsemen fell to Loyola 15-30. William Manning scored seven points in the second and third quarters, while Kevin Vasquez sank his three 2s all in the fourth quarter. Jose Velez hit a two in the second. The varsity Horsemen will take on Our Lady of the Assumption Monday night in the varsity championship game at 5:30 p.m. in the gym.

St. Helena parishioners now have access to short term, bilingual professional counseling to help parishioners through issues and crises that can be successfully addressed by brief counseling support such as marital problems, raising children, eldercare, job loss, or bereavement.
