The varsity Horsemen of St. Helena School will play Monday night in the finals of the Catholic Basketball League Tip off Tournament, having defeated St. Ignatius School 56-22 and St. Ignatius Loyola School 37-21 in games played earlier this week. Two varsity players, Francisco Mattei and Omari Ward, scored in double digits during both games. Ward scored 19 points against Ignatius and 12 points against Loyola, while Mattei scored 13 against Ignatius and 16 against Loyola. So far, Ward is the only Horseman to score in all four quarters, which he did against Loyola. The Horsemen sank three 3s in their opening game against Ignatius, coming from Mattei, Hope Martinez, and Kameron Carrasquilla, while Ward and Mattei each sank a three against Loyola. Justin Martinez hit five 2s against Ignatius and scored seven points against Loyola. Devonne Stewart sank a two in the third quarter against Loyola, and Adam Waldrop hit a two in both the second and fourth quarters against Ignatius. Nick Casey was the only Loyola player to score in double digits, with 12, playing in his first organized basketball game. Loyola was 0/3 from the foul line, while the horsemen were 3/8. Against Ignatius, the Horsemen were 13/17 and Ignatius was 3/10 from the line. In the opening junior varsity game of the tournament, the Horsemen fell to Loyola 15-30. William Manning scored seven points in the second and third quarters, while Kevin Vasquez sank his three 2s all in the fourth quarter. Jose Velez hit a two in the second. The varsity Horsemen will take on Our Lady of the Assumption Monday night in the varsity championship game at 5:30 p.m. in the gym.
