In his 67 years of life, Bronx resident Raul Irizzary spent just a single month outside his hometown. The beloved senior citizen was hit by a van and killed before sunrise Monday while crossing a street in the Soundview section, leaving behind a heartbroken son and a legion of local admirers. “This whole neighborhood is mourning this loss because he was loved by everyone,” said his son Joseph one day after the fatal accident. “I loved my father so much. This tragedy comes as a shock to everyone.” Raul Irizzary had already endured a rough 2020, losing his mother and uncle to natural causes in the year of the pandemic. “My dad was a generous, kind-hearted person who would give his last dollar to someone who needed it more than him,” his son recalled Tuesday. According to his son, the Bronx-born and raised Raul left the city exactly once in his life. He stayed a month with his son and daughter-in-law in Florida before returning to the borough of his birth. “He couldn’t stay away from the city any longer, so he wanted to move back,” he recalled. Raul was out walking in the dark on Soundview Ave. near Commonwealth Ave. when he was struck by the northbound van while crossing mid-block around 5 a.m., with Irizarry pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center. Police said the driver remained at the accident scene afterward. The music-loving victim was a bit of a handyman, collecting stereos and repairing electronics in his spare time — and he was fascinated by trains, according to his son. “One time he sat and watched videos of trains on YouTube all day on a tablet, and he loved every second of it.”
